Gremlins, Ghostbusters and Goonies… Oh My!
For many, the mid-80s was a great time to be a kid with a penchant for entertainment. The country was coming out of a severe recession which meant parents finally had some extra money, the first Nintendo Entertainment System had just hit the market and ‘3G’ was something more than a just another buzz word to sell more phones. That’s why, when the Autumn Society of Illustration announced that their next art show would be based on three of the best films from that decade, I couldn’t help but get excited.
Entitled “The 3G Show,” the event boasts an impressive roster of over a dozen talented and diverse artist, each paying homage to a trifecta of pop culture cinema: Gremlins, Ghostbusters and The Goonies. Set to open next Friday, September 3rd from 7-10pm at Los Angeles-based Gallery 1988, the show will run until September 22nd 2010. Gallery 1988 has also announced that they will be featuring “an exact working replica of Ecto-1 (sweet!) and an original Ghostbuster” in addition to some of Mattel’s latest Ghostbusters action figures at the opening reception. Check out a sample of some of my favorites pieces from the show below.

Rondal Scott III is a creative instigator who tackles each day with Red Bull-induced enthusiasm and is a self-professed Twitter addict. His obsession with horror movies and pop culture inspired him to found Strange Kids Club in 2009. On occasion he also writes part time for Bloodsprayer, an all-horror blog focused on “…all the filth that’s fit to publish.”

Wow – this would be awesome to go to! Those are three of my favorite movies. :D
I know, right? A real, working Ecto-1 and a Ghostbuster to boot? Sweet!
And these are just a slim selection of all the pieces I’ve seen over at The Autumn Society, there’s so much more!
These concepts are amazing! Definitely given me some inspiration for my own work. I’ve always been a fan of taking pop culture icons and transforming them in a way that reflects contemporary artwork, or dropping them into related mediums, as was shown with Jude Buffum’s 8-bit graphic renderings of characters from the movies. I was also partial to Fionda’s illustrations by the way he exaggerated the features of the characters.
@MrMoustache: I couldn’t agree more about the merger of pop culture with contemporary aesthetics. Buffum’s 8-bit work is perhaps my favorite as well, though Orozco’s illustration come a close second with their Felix the Cat-esque character design. All of the artists in this show are really phenomenal!
